Craft Spirits Market Intelligence and Tracking Report January 2025

The January 2025 Craft Spirits Market intelligence and Tracking Survey covering over 800 UK craft spirits from 85 distilleries/ producers. This month includes some summaries for the whole of 2024.

Observations' this month:

Nanny state continues to turn its beady eye on to the alcoholic drinks market and spirits markets in particular. This time it is the US government looking at cancer type warnings for alcohol, following moves in Ireland last year. US imports also face potentially difficult times if caught up in tariffs wars promised by the incoming president; also who is a teetotaller.

There continues to be turmoil in the independent spirits sectors as brands seek to reduce costs / struggles with profitability. With brands like Didsbury announcing Liquidation, Dark Matter being acquired by Ardent, Cygnet moving production to Penderyn and Diageo owned Chase moving production to Scotland.

This month/ report period there has also been a lot of news re GIs: with Pernod Ricard-owned Havana Club applying for a geographical indication (GI) for Cuban rum with the European Union; Welsh Whisky having secured GI protection in Japan; and the US Single Malt GI finally being recognised by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). Fingers crossed for the English Whisky GI next.

This year looks likely be very interesting.
